nay: asan kuya mo?
beyts: ewan. may i-memeet daw.
beyts: naku, mommy. mabait yun.
beyts: syempre. anak ng pari eh.
dad (on the verge of sleep): ayos.
*syosyotain was the exact word used.
my whole day has been spent watching sports.
earlier this morning, the Pacquiao-Barrera rematch has been aired over GMA 7. i thought that it would been shown at around 8 a.m. so i woke up early. but i was mistaken, the fight would be shown at 10. i ended up watching inu-yasha.
then came the undercards. the first fight was good. and the Filipino won. i forgot his name though. the other undercards were boring so i just watched that Judy Ann-Ryan movie. then dozed off. then watched the undercard of Forbes and another mexican fighter. the contender graduate won.
at around 1:30, the fight started. as promised, Kyla sang the controversial national anthem. Ara Mina was said to have been the one to sing it but due to Manny’s alleged affair with her, the deal was off.
now, after his anticipated fight with Barrera, i somehow like him again.
i liked the way he showed them his heart and sportsmanship in this fight. i liked the way he weaved his head. the way he threw those right jabs, most of which just hit air. i liked the footwork, so reminiscent of Ali’s pedalling. his stamina has greatly improved! for once, he can last for 12 rounds. and the way he penetrated Barrera’s defenses was just spectacular.
but then again, the old, exciting Pacquiao was not there on the ring. the hard abdominals were not there to shield his internals from body blows. his old one-twos have weakened. but most important of all, he has lost the weight in his punches. yes, there was that much talked-about left straight but it can’t bring down the old and ailing Barrera.
there might have been close calls but the hunger was not there. everytime Barrera wobbled, there was no follow-ups. he was always open to Barrera’s counters. oh well.
but Pacquiao did great. he did great with his acting. that 11th round illegal blow from Barrera was a classic. that right downward hook was just a brush but Pac-Man managed to go to his corner and wobble-off, as if he was hit by George Foreman in his prime. he clung off the ropes and paraded over to the other neutral corner. his past two movies have paid off. his acting was superb.
oh, well. all cheers to the Pambansang Kamao. details here.
and I hope Manny Pacquiao stops hitting on wussies and settle for fighters who could really go with him, toe-to-toe like Edwin Valero.
after the Pacquiao-Barrera fight was another war. the UAAP season 70 men’s basketball finals was really a dramatic battle. and it was won by the De La Salle Green Archers.
it was a real upset, seeing the team with the best record in the play-offs trashed by a battle-weary team. the University of the East Red Warriors have been the best team there is with an untarnished record of 14-0. they were just there waiting for the final contender.
but the Green Archers have been unrelenting. They pulled UST down, then settled the controversial rivalry with Ateneo. then this time, the Warriors were just overwhelmed and were brutally choked by the Green Archer defense.
sayang. ang galing pa naman ng mga UE. masaya na naman ang boss ko. kawawa naman kaming mga dukha at taong masa. matapobre yun eh. sigurado sobrang panlalait na naman ang maririnig ko bukas.

KOMIKON 2007 will be held at the UP Diliman’s Bahay ng Alumni on November 17, 2007, from 10am to 6pm. Again it will showcase the creations of Filipino artists from various genres and themes and give tribute to the creators and their creations. The 3rd Filipino Komiks Convention aims to bring together comic book artists/groups and publishers in a venue where they could present their talents, works and services to the public. Most importantly, it aims to give a break to aspiring comic artists. It would like to offer a venue for new art groups and different generations of artists for a free exchange of ideas. Hopefully it would lead to a transcending of stereotypes and broaden the scope of comics – from local to international to cross-cultural, sequential to strips, amateur to professional and traditional publication to independent comics publishing. This event will raise awareness of the exciting state of contemporary Philippine comics industry.

OMG. i can’t believe it. i’m such a sucker for such trivial things. hahaha.
There was this scene in the episode, where Susan Mayer Delfino, played by Teri Hatcher, is talking with her doctor. The guy happens to be her OB-Gyne. She tells him this line.
Okay, before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.
let us assume that this is some attempt to be funny or just to prove that Filipinos are already overwhelming American hospitals with all our nurses and doctors. but singling out Filipinos is just, just so racist. why didn’t the marvelous writers of the show choose any other nationality?
and somehow, this line is such a low blow. my bestfriend is currently on his third year in University of the Philippines medical school. he says he’s doing quite fine with all the stress and the exams. i am glad to note that he’s one of the best performing students in his batch. but despite that, my friend, who used to be such a heartthrob in college is beginning to look more of a wuss. he is losing his hair. he’s lost a lot of weight and he looks so shitty. my God, at 24, he’s already going bald!
my friend is studying in a Philippine Medical School. he happens to be one of the smartest people i know. and with that line from the show, it’s like throwing shit at my friend’s face. and it’s like throwing shit at me too.
such a remark coming from an American show, a country known for its democracy, its gender-sensitive and race-sensitive advocacies, this display of comedy is not so funny. it is so disappointing. i’ve always thought that America has been better, with its rich history of racial prejudice. i thought they knew better. but i guess, things still need to be changed.
there has been an uproar among Filipinos in the States about the show. they’ve already made a site petitioning ABC, the show’s network, to ask for a public apology. sign up here. i’ve already signed up. i’m the 17,991 petitioner.
i’ve seen in the news that ABC still hasn’t made any attempts to answer the issue. until then, i’ll be waiting. i hope they do ask for an apology.
